Maintaining your balance in December

Hey there! I hope that December isn’t proving to be too hectic for you. I’m currently battling the office treats that appear at this time of year and trying to balance my workload, festive parties and training. I don’t have rollers, but even on a turbo trainer, I don’t think I could match Sir Chris Hoy’s multi-tasking skills: If you...

Can you change your triathlon performance in 8 hours?

Chances are you’ve carefully planned your training schedule to help you reach peak performance for your A race, whenever it comes in the season. You may also be working on a nutrition plan so that you are at your optimum weight… and all whilst working and juggling family commitments (and possibly study). For many people this means compromises. For me,...

Heartbreak Tailwind 10 race recap

I ran my last race of the year today: the Heartbreak Tailwind 10 by Race New Forest. It’s a new race this year, and about the only race I’ve seen in December that doesn’t have a festive theme (I love Santa dashes and Christmas pudding runs, but I’ve run one of them competitively!) How’s my training been? I’ve been so...

Swim, run, bike – my weekend in that order

The weekend didn’t get off to a great start. I felt exhausted by Friday evening, but Stuart had booked for us to go for a swimming assessment, so I had to find some motivation. I’m glad I did as I fitted in a sort-of triathlon of swim, run, bike. Swimming assessment We arrived at the pool early and I got...

What have I been reading?

I’ve not been exercising a lot in the last couple of weeks, which has given me plenty of time to read. The main thing that I’ve been reading is The man who cycled the world by Mark Beaumont. I’m not revealing any spoilers by saying that it’s an autobiographical account of one man’s bike ride that takes him around the...

My journey to becoming a running coach

A few years ago, I was encouraged to do a one day course to become a Leader in Running Fitness. This was the start of my journey to becoming a running coach. I wasn’t sure whether it was right for me, but I figured that it would teach me a little more about myself as a runner. Hopefully, I would...

Secret Santa for triathletes

At this time of year, people start to draw lots for the office Secret Santa, but what can you get if you draw the office athlete? Here are my picks… Nuun are fantastic electrolyte hydration tablets. Just drop one tab into your running/cycling water bottle and you’ve got a sugar-free drink with all the electrolytes you need to keep you...

How do you deal with the off-season slump?

I’ll be honest that I’ve been in a bit of a slump recently. I spent the first half of the year building up to Ironman Dublin 70.3 in August and the Scilly Swim Challenge in September and those events were immediately followed by the Tour de Y. I then realised that I was at the top of my tri club’s...

Your six step party season pre-tox plan

December is creeping ever closer, which means party season is nearly upon us. Cue late nights, boozy shenanigans and that seasonal ‘fitness amnesia’ that seems to strike without fail year on year. But not this time; this time, I’m here to help you fight the cause of festive fatigue, rather than treating the symptoms after a month of overindulgence. Simply...

Are you ready to get some winter miles in?

I’ve only got one event left this year (Tailwind 10), so I’m now focussing on base training ready for next season. For many people, base training means focusing on strength and endurance. I really want to work on some speed in my running as this has been neglected this year. Over winter, I also want to work on my cycling...

Hi, I'm Tamsyn!

Triathlete | Blogger | Running Coach & Fitness Instructor

As an overweight couch potato, I decided to turn my life around. I lost over 33lbs/15kg and now love keeping fit and healthy. In February 2013, I set myself a challenge to complete an iron-distance triathlon (2.4 mile/3.8k swim; 112 mile/180k bike; 26.2 mile/42.2k run).

Since starting my triathlon journey, I’ve:

  • learnt to swim and completed a 17.5km sea swim
  • bought my first road bike and cycled across Japan
  • run six marathons.
  • had a baby.

  • I’ve not completed an Ironman yet… but I’m getting there.
