Thursday Tri Reads – Triathlon Plus August 2016 issue

Man reading whilst sitting on rocks by the sea

My iron levels are currently low and I’m not able to train as much as usual, but that’s not going to stop me from working towards my triathlon goals. Even if I can’t be physically active, I can still keep my mind active and keep learning.

This week, I’ve been reading the latest issue of Triathlon Plus. It’s got loads of articles to keep me interested when sitting around waiting for medical appointments. Some of the features mentioned on the cover include:

  • An Exclusive Interview with Vicky Holland
  • STRENGTH TRAINING: Get Stronger and Faster Without Wasting Time
  • FREE 32 PAGE SWIM SUPPLEMENT: Pool Drills / Open Water / Kit
  • TOUR BIKES: Who Will Be King Of The Mountains?

An article that seemed to speak directly to me is ‘When you know, you just know’, written by Amy Kilpin. It includes the line, “Carrying on in spite of fatigue… will only have deeper repercussions later on.” I’ve been trying so hard to keep up with my usual levels of training, but I’ve got to accept that backing off is the sensible thing to do right now.

I particularly enjoyed reading the news article about the team that has been selected for the Rio Olympics, although I still feel extremely sorry for Jodie Stimpson. It was heart-breaking watching her being interviewed by the BBC in June:

Rio 2016: Jodie Stimpson tearful over Olympics omission

I strongly recommend that you read Jodie’s blogpost about what has happened. She starts off by saying:

So, this isn’t going to be the easiest of years by any stretch, but I’m happy to say I’m doing okay. It’s taking a while and I’m still building myself back up both emotionally and physically. It’s not okay about Rio…and it never will be. Nothing I achieve this year will replace what the Olympics mean to me, but I have shifted my focus, and I will do all I can to podium on the Overall World Triathlon Series. Each race has been about building and learning, and I will continue to try and improve as much as I possibly can throughout the year now. Let’s see where that takes me.

I really hope that she does well in WTS this year.

The inspiration section (‘Operation Ironman’) in this issue is about George Mahood, a man who was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumour who went on to complete an Ironman four months after his operation. It’s an impressive story – I recently read Mahood’s autobiographical book of the same name. It’s really inspirational and made me feel that completing an Ironman next year could still be a possibility!
