OK, I’ve just done something crazy…

Close up of an eye

This week has been hectic (as usual), and I’ve barely had time to post. From tomorrow, I will have time to post, but won’t be able to. So what’s going on? Surgery, that’s what!

I’ve been thinking about having laser eye surgery for a long time. My sister has had it done and quite a few of my friends and colleagues, but I’ve held back as I’m nervous. Earlier this year, I read fellow runner and blogger Dawn’s account of her surgery, and it was one of many things that made me start to consider my options again. I’ve finally made the decision and am going to have LASIK tomorrow… which means that I won’t be using my computer/phone etc for a couple of weeks 🙁 It’s going to be tough, but the end result should be worth it.

In the meantime, I’ve been spending too much time online and have entered a seriously crazy event: the Scilly Swim Challenge. It’s 15k of swimming interspersed with 10k of walking (and some eating and drinking). It’s going to take some serious training, but I reckon that if I can crack it, then an Ironman might not seem so terrifying!

Update: December 2015

The laser eye surgery was a great success. There was a little bit of pain for <24 hours and since then I’ve had no problems – I can’t recommend it highly enough!

I blogged about my experience at the Scilly Swim Challenge in September 2015. It was an amazing day and really helped to build up my swimming ability and confidence.

  1. Great decision Tamsyn! Best decision I ever made in my life to get Lasik – wish I had done it earlier! Don’t worry about any ‘downtime’…. I had mine done on a Thursday afternoon, was out and about shopping on the High St the next day and back working in front of a screen on Monday 🙂 x

    • I’m hoping mine turns out that way. My workplace is open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning, but as I cycle to work and then often spend all day at a screen, I’ve been allowed to recover at home. My office is then closed until 5th January, so I’ve plenty of recouperation time 🙂

    • Fortunately, there are little islands to break it up, so if I run out of energy, I can stop! There’s going to be a lot of time in the pool in 2015. My biggest concern is that the water will be too cold for me and will cause my asthma to flare up.

        • It’s been a frustrating year because of the asthma, but I’ve come to the realisation that I’ve had it for years, so having a strategy to deal with it feels amazing. I’ve now run 5k in under 25 minutes twice in two weeks, and neither run left me with chest pain for a couple of days, which is what always happened in the past, so I’m hopeful that everything is now under control 🙂

          • Yay! My doc just put menon something nee this year ans i can finally so outside activities in pollen season! It is liberating!

  2. Wow !!! All the best for the lasik ! I’ve always been too chicken to have the actual procedure although the thought of never having contact lenses faff or glasses again sounds bliss !! Loving the challenge swim too. Can’t wait to hear more ….. Have a great Christmas 🙂

I'd love to hear your thoughts...
